Michael D. Barnes, a Democrat, was first elected in 2005 and is now serving his fourth term on City Council. He is chair of the Budget Committee, vice chair of the Transportation & Planning Committee, and a member of both the Community Safety and Housing & Neighborhood Development Committees. He is the City Council's representative to the University City Partners and serves on the North Carolina Governor's Crime Commission.


Barnes received his law degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law and his bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the managing member of Barnes Law Office, PLLC and is married with three children.
