It is the policy of the Charlotte Fire Department (CFD) to maintain a positive working relationship with
the media, the business community, and the general public. The primary responsibility of the Public Information Officer (PIO) is to facilitate the flow of factual information from CFD to the public. The CFD Office of Public Affairs is staffed by two captains who are under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief.

Primary functions of the PIO are, but not limited to:

• Dispense pertinent information regarding departmental policies and emergency situations of major news value.  
• Field and facilitate non‐emergency requests for information and service from (but not limited to) the media, the business community, and the public.
• Liaison between victims of emergencies who have suffered significant loss and disaster/crisis aid agencies, when requested.
