Fire Department Administration

The Charlotte Fire Department (CFD) strives to maintain a positive working relationship with the media, the business community, and the general public. The primary responsibility of the Public Information Officer (PIO) is to facilitate the collaboration of information between CFD and the public. Two captains and a firefighter who are under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief staff the CFD Office of Media & Public Affairs.

The Charlotte Fire Department currently makes use of several social media/web 2.0 applications including Twitter, Yahoo Groups (After-Action Reports), Google Groups (CharlotteFD_ALERT), BlogSpot (CFD News & Information), FriendFeed, Blog Talk Radio, Ustream, Bambuser, Delicious, and Facebook for communicating critical messaging and public information that promotes a safe and healthy lifestyle. The Charlotte Fire Department also uses Google Translator to translate blog content into various foreign languages such as Spanish, Italian, French, Vietnamese, Chinese and others. ‘Flip’ & "GoPro" video, and digital still photography cameras are used to produce video clips and photos which are posted on YouTube, Vimeo and Flickr respectively. CFD utilizes Bambuser & Skype video conferencing to conduct live media interviews and press briefings.
