Fire and Life Safety Education

Educating the public is the most effective way to prevent the devastating effects of fires and other injuries.
To accomplish this goal, the Charlotte Fire Department delivers fire & life safety education for the residents, businesses, and visitors of Charlotte.

The most effective way to prevent the tragedy of fire and other injuries is to educate the public on their causes and to introduce strategies in dealing with these emergencies.  The Charlotte Fire Department partners with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools to provide the safety tools needed to prevent tragedies.  CFD offers multiple programs for Charlotte and Mecklenburg area schools.

Educator-based programs

Most community events are best served with a fire truck visit from one of our stations.  If you have a classroom-based event, consider inviting an educator to your program.  The following programs are conducted by NC Fire & Life Safety Educators and offered to classes.

Pre-K and Early Elementary Reading Program
This program consists of reading fire safety books to children, playing fire safety games/music, and displaying fire gear. Activities vary depending on group size and time constraints.  Approx. 60-45 minutes

3rd Grade Fire and Life Safety Program
This program is a standardized lesson plan presented to 3rd grade classrooms.  Students are provided with the knowledge and materials to protect themselves and their families from a fire or burn injury.  Approx.  30-45 minutes.

National Fire Prevention Week
CFD highlights fire safety during National Fire Prevention Week to promote fire safety in the community for the month of October.  CFD programs vary each year; however the Annual Fire Prevention Week Bulletin Board Contest for 3rd graders is the signature event for this week.  CFD joins with community partners to bring this program to our children.  The winners receive cash and in-kind products for their schools.  Registration to compete opens each August.  To request a registration form and obtain complete rules contact CFD Fire & Life Safety Education

Middle School Burn & Arson Prevention Program
This program is a standardized lesson plan presented to middle school classrooms.  Students are provided with the knowledge and materials to protect themselves and their families from a fire or burn injury, as well as arson prevention.  Approx. 30-45 minutes.

Juvenile Firesetter Program
This program is a standardized, age-appropriate lesson plan presented to children 16 and under who have shown curiosity toward fire or who have started fires.  Students and their families are provided with the knowledge and materials to protect themselves from future fire incidents.  The program is a collaborative effort with area juvenile services and law enforcement organizations.  Approx. 90 minutes.

Blaze
Whos that coming through the smoke and haze??  Its Blaze!
Created in 2004 as a local partner to Sparky, Blaze is the official mascot of the Charlotte Fire Department.  Blaze assists the CFD with fire safety awareness and is featured in his own video shown during programs.  Blaze attends fire safety programs, parades and even sporting events in order to teach young and old about how to stay safe.
