Shared Services Makes Official Transition
On July 1, Business Support Services (BSS) officially rebranded to Shared Services. The department’s rebranding is not simply a change in name, but also the result of a shift in culture. "Shared Services” is a common service model in the private sector and growing in the public sector. It is defined as a streamlined approach to service delivery where customers can rely on the provision of multiple services from one department.
The City of Charlotte's Shared Services department is a provider of Fleet Management, Procurement Management, Resource Management and Technology Management services. The services provided are essential to all of the departments across the City who serve the citizens of Charlotte. Shared Services' customer base also includes other municipal, county, state and federal government agencies.

Apartment Security Grant and Facade Improvement Grant Programs
Apartment communities in targeted business corridor areas can now apply for the new Apartment Security Grant and Apartment Façade Improvement Grant programs. Applications for the security grant program will be accepted on a rolling basis; applications for the Facade Improvement Grant will be reviewed quarterly with the next application deadline occurring on Wednesday, August 15.
The Apartment Façade Improvement Grant Program seeks to remove blight and improve Charlotte’s quality of life by assisting apartment owners with improving the appearance of aging apartment buildings, creating modern entrances with monument signs, landscaping and decorative gates, and by bringing parking and landscaping into conformance with current codes. The Apartment Security Improvement Grant Program seeks to develop relationships between owners and managers of apartment communities located in priority areas and community police officers, while at the same time reducing the opportunity for crime by creating a safer environment for residents while at the same time.

Solid Waste Services Launches Additional CNG Trucks
Solid Waste Services (SWS) has added four new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles to its fleet. The vehicle purchases were supplemented from funds awarded to Solid Waste Services through the U.S. Department of Energy Clean Cities grant, Carolina Blue Skies & Green Jobs Initiative, administered locally by the Centralina Council of Governments.
The additional CNG trucks are part of Solid Waste Services’ commitment to the environment and bring the department’s total CNG truck fleet to six. Using CNG as fuel offers lower emissions than standard diesel trucks and less expensive.
The 31 cubic-yard side-loading automated CNG vehicles will collect residential waste throughout the city and be fueled daily at Piedmont Natural Gas.
