Why: The Charlotte Streetcar Starter Project will begin construction in December 2012. The Starter Project consists of 1.5 miles of track from Presbyterian Hospital to the Charlotte Transportation Center. The estimated cost is $37 million, with $24.99 million funded through a federal U.S. Department of Transportation Urban Circulator grant. The remaining $12 million will be funded by the City of Charlotte. Passenger service is anticipated to start in 2015. For more information on the Charlotte Streetcar Starter Project, visit
