The City of Charlotte’s GOV Channel recently won an award for the video titled ‘Eastland Makes Its Mark on Community’ in a contest hosted by the Charlotte Business Journal and Environmental Holdings Group.
Director of Corporate Communications & Marketing for the City, Kim McMillan, said of the story: “The video—originally inspired to focus on the iconic mall sun signs—turned into much more when we met east Charlotte resident Terrell Wilson.”
The story features several local residents who came together to celebrate the impact and legacy of one of Charlotte's most memorable retail and entertainment centers, which housed a year-round ice skating rink and the first food court on the east coast. As demolition and construction on the property continue, it serves as an opportunity to reflect on the storied history and bright beginnings for this important venue.
As the second place winner, the City of Charlotte was awarded an art collage and retro food court signs that graced one of the most memorable sections of Eastland Mall. The City is determining the best location for the signs but will display the art collage for the public to enjoy when visiting the Government Center.
