New District 1 Representative Billy Maddalon was sworn into office today during an informal ceremony in the Charlotte City Clerk’s Office. City Council selected Maddalon to fill the District 1 seat during its business meeting last night. Maddalon was chosen from a list of 11 applicants to fill the vacancy, created by Mayor Patsy Kinsey’s recent appointment. To be considered for the seat, applicants had to reside in District 1, be at least 21 years-old, and registered to vote as a Democrat (i.e., same political party as Ms. Kinsey).
“This is the opportunity of a lifetime for me, and I’ve always considered myself a public servant, although not necessarily in an elected capacity; so this opportunity will truly be a challenge, ” Maddalon said. “I look forward to serving my neighbors in District 1 and fortunately I’m pretty engaged with the issues in our area. Balancing the dual imperatives of livability and affordability for our citizens is a constant challenge and at the end of the day, that’s the essence of the job. Four months isn’t a long period of time to be in the role, but I’m committed to doing the very best I can while I have the chance.”
Maddalon is the managing owner of Unique Southern Estates. His civic service includes serving as a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity National Board of Directors and co-chair of the Eastland Area Strategies Team. He has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Communication from North Carolina State University. Mayor Kinsey will swear in Maddalon during a formal and public swearing-in ceremony at 4 pm on Monday, July 29 in the Council Chamber at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center. The event will be carried live on The GOV Channel
, Time Warner Cable Channel 16.
