The Charlotte Chamber along with the Charlotte International Cabinet on behalf of Mayor Anthony Foxx hosted a Mayor’s Business Networking Reception on Thursday, November 17, at the Portman Ritz-Carlton in Shanghai, China.
The event, which was held during the last leg of the delegation’s ten-day trip to China, offered the opportunity for local business and state legislative leaders to showcase Charlotte while on foreign soil. With nearly 80 in attendance, the gathering also allowed for an exclusive opportunity to learn more about their Chinese counterparts in the business community.
“Our primary focus is to strengthen existing business relationships,” said Asian Chamber Economic Developer Eileen Cai, “while creating new ones to hopefully encourage greater economic development between the two countries…particularly in the energy sector.”
In 2010, the Charlotte Chamber estimated that 13,000 clean energy jobs existed in Charlotte. As part of the trip, the Mayor and delegates have met with leaders in the hi-tech, energy and environmental industries to learn more about how China is manufacturing and using technologies to help build greener, more sustainable cities. Delegates have also worked to develop an action plan for the EcoPartnership program. Currently, the Charlotte region counts 251 energy sector companies.
“Charlotte is working very hard to position itself as an energy hub not only within the United States, but around the world, and this trip has helped solidify our reputation in that space,” said Mayor Foxx at a telepresence briefing local media.
Before departing China, Mayor Foxx and the delegation will visit the Jetion Solar Corporation’s facilities. The company is leading supplier of photovoltaic products and is engaged in research, development, sale and service of photovoltaic products. In July, Jetion established its North American sales and service center in Charlotte.
Media note: the Mayor will not be available for interviews upon his return.
