Today Charlotte City Manager Curt Walton announced that he will retire this December as City Manager, a position he has held since June 2007. Walton leads an organization of over 6,800 employees and an annual budget of $1.7 billion. Prior to being selected as City Manager, Walton served as Assistant City Manager and the Deputy City Manager for Internal Operations from 2002-2007. He started his career with the City of Charlotte in 1986 as a Budget and Evaluation Analyst and moved up through the ranks to become Budget & Evaluation Manager and ultimately Budget Director in 1996. During his tenure at the City, he was responsible for the City’s transportation, planning and technology initiatives. He also oversaw many special projects, such as the City’s first public safety plan, restructuring the City’s solid waste services delivery model, construction of the Charlotte Bobcats Arena and the development of the CharMeck 311 customer service center, which now responds to 1.7 million calls and facilitates 410,000 service requests annually. Most recently, he led development of the most comprehensive and robust Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) in the City’s history and helped make history when the City organization provided services necessary to make the 2012 Democratic National Convention a tremendous success.
In addition to his 27 years with the City of Charlotte, Walton’s 32-year career in public service also includes working as Assistant Town Manager for the Town of Wake Forest, North Carolina, serving on the staff of the North Carolina House of Representatives and completing a year’s internship at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities Department, his first experience with the City of Charlotte.

-- including the recent 2012 Democratic National Convention. He will be greatly missed, and all of us on the Charlotte City Council wish him well,” says Mayor Anthony Foxx.
Walton received Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed a master of Urban Administration degree (now Public Administration) from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1982. Walton will be inducted into the UNCC Alumni Hall of Fame in November.
In addition to being a member of many international and national public sector management organizations and serving on the boards of Charlotte Center City Partners, the Queens University of Charlotte Board of Visitors, the Levine Museum of the New South, the Champions for Education (Wells Fargo Golf Championship) and the Community Catalyst Fund, Walton is a Board member and tireless advocate for the United Way of the Central Carolinas. In 2011, the United Way of North Carolina presented the “Spirit of North Carolina” Award to the City of Charlotte for Campaign Excellence, the second such award received during Walton’s tenure.

The Mayor and City Council will begin the search process in October to hire the next City Manager.
