Communicated: January 17, 2014
Closure dates: January 8, 2014 to January 24, 2014
The utility work being conducted at the intersection of Hawthorne Lane and East Fifth Street began on Wednesday, January 8, 2014. This closure has progressed to the 1700 block of East Fifth Street between Hawthorne Lane and Lamar Avenue. This block closed January 17, 2014 and will reopen Friday, January 24, 2014. Hawthorne Lane between East Fifth Street and Elizabeth Avenue will reopen Saturday, January 18, 2014. This closure is necessary to accommodate utility relocation and construction related to the CityLYNX Gold Line – Phase 1. Motorists can expect congestion and additional delays in the project area.
Motorists on westbound East Fifth Street can use North Caswell Road, East Fourth Street and Hawthorne Lane as a detour (shown in green on map below). Motorists on eastbound East Fifth Street can use Hawthorne Lane, East Seventh Street and North Caswell Road as a detour (shown in blue on map below).
Local access will be maintained.
CATS will be affected.
Weather and unforeseen circumstances occasionally prevent work from being completed as scheduled, and make it unsafe to reopen lanes or streets when planned. When this occurs, City traffic engineers work directly with other City staff and contractors to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and reduce impacts to the traveling public.
Pedestrians walking near work zone areas should be alert, cautious and allow extra traveling time. It is advised they cross at signalized intersections, use pedestrian walk signals where available and abide by detour signage.
Motorists traveling through work zone areas should be alert and extra cautious. Drivers should get in the correct lane well in advance and constantly be on the lookout for vehicles merging into adjacent travel lanes as they approach a work zone. Drivers should double their following distance.
