Charlotte has been designated a "Bronze Level" Walk Friendly Community (WFC) by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC). The WFC process looks at how cities are working to improve a wide range of conditions related to walking including safety, mobility, access and comfort. The WFC program distinguishes cities and towns that are leading the way in walkability.
The Bronze Level designation was awarded to Charlotte due to its efforts to improve the pedestrian environment through the Transportation Action Plan (TAP),
the Sidewalk Retrofit Program and Charlotte’s commitment to building "complete streets." Charlotte is one of only 12 cities across the nation to receive this recognition out of 35 total applicants, and it is one of only four cities to receive a Bronze award.
