The largest public water and wastewater utility in The Carolinas, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department proudly serves more than 788,190 customers in the City of Charlotte and greater Mecklenburg County -- including the towns of Matthews, Mint Hill, Pineville, Huntersville, Davidson, and Cornelius.

OUR SERVICES
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department (CMUD) employs a workforce totaling about 746. We work both day and night to deliver water and wastewater services.
CMUD employees are trained in many different disciplines such as chemistry, biology, civil engineering, physics, public health, and the operation and maintenance of the many types of infrastructure you rely on daily for our services.
BUDGET
Providing both high-quality drinking water and wastewater services, CMUD has an annual operating budget of $286 million. Of this total, $117.8 million is applied directly toward capital improvement construction projects (new pipes, plants and other infrastructure) and debt service to finance these significant projects over a long-term payback period.

Tax dollars do not pay for our operation. Our operating budget is funded strictly from your water and sewer bill payment, and our capital improvements are paid for mostly through the sale of bonds. Please take a look at our Rates and Fees and see how we charge for water and sewer services.
