CATS Hosts Public Meetings to Gather Input Regarding Proposed Bus
The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is holding a series of open
house public outreach meetings over the next week to gather input regarding
proposed adjustments to some bus routes.
If adopted, the service change would be implemented on March 3, 2014.
The public outreach meetings are open house format designed for you to drop in
anytime during the meeting hours. CATS wants your feedback and encourages
transit customers and members of the community to attend the meeting to ask
questions and learn more about the proposed changes to these routes.

Route 2 Ashley Park
From Mint Street, the proposed routing would turn right on Morehead Street and
resume regular routing at Freedom Drive. Service on Mint Street and
Summit Avenue would be discontinued. This proposal is being considered to
increase on-time performance.
For trips to DMSI, the proposed routing would turn left on Alleghany Street to
serve DSMI before returning to Carrowmore Place. All other trips will
continue to turn right on Alleghany Street from Carlyle Drive.
Route 11 – North Tryon
CATS will share information regarding how construction projects will impact
Route 11 North Tryon. Current and future construction projects, such as utility
relocation, bridge replacement and road widening, will result of the periodic
closures of North Tryon Street.
Route 29 UNCC
Proposed routing adjustments are for trips continuing to Wells Fargo CIC and
Hewitt Associates. The proposed routing would turn right on University
City Blvd (Highway 49) from UNCC, turn right on WT Harris Boulevard, then turn
left on IBM Drive and continue along IBM Drive back to WT Harris
Boulevard. These limited trips would no longer enter or operate on Hewitt
or CIC campuses. These destinations would be served by bus stops on IBM
Drive. Route 29 service on Mallard Creek Church Road and North Tryon
Street would be discontinued. These areas would remain served by Route 11
North Tryon Street. Routing between UNCC and South Park would not be
Route 34 Freedom Drive
The proposed routing would continue on 4th
Street Extension, staying straight onto Tuckaseegee Road to Berryhill Road.
Service on Walnut Avenue, Sumter Avenue, and State Street would be discontinued
on Route 34. Service in this area would be maintained by Route 8.
From Toddville Road, the proposed routing would turn right
on Tuckaseegee Road, then turn left on Little Rock Road at the signal. Existing
areas along Queen City Drive would be served by bus stops on Tuckaseegee Road,
Little Rock Road, and Mulberry Church Road. Service on Mulberry Church Road
would only operate inbound serving the shelter at Queen City Drive. Outbound
customers traveling to Mulberry Church Road would need to either deboard at
Tuckaseegee Road and Toddville Road or ride through Scott Futrell Drive.
Outbound trips would no longer layover on Scott Futrell Drive.
With these proposed changes, travel time between CTC and
Berryhill Road would improve, and CATS would add one earlier trip and one later
trip on the route.
Route 39 Eastway
The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is holding an open house public
meeting on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm to solicit input
regarding proposed route adjustments to Route 39.
Proposed routing would discontinue service north of The Plaza, including North
Tryon Street Tom Hunter Road, Canterwood Drive, Elgywood Lane, and Arrowhead
Drive. Service to these areas would continue to be maintained by Routes
11 North Tryon and 211 Hidden Valley.
From Eastway Drive, proposed routing would turn left on The Plaza, left on
Sugar Creek Road, and right on Eastway Drive and resume regular routing.
This proposal is under consideration because a construction project will close
Eastway Drive between The Plaza and North Tryon Street, starting March 2014.
This construction closure will prevent all traffic from traveling Eastway Drive
between North Tryon Street and The Plaza.
Route 51 –
Proposed routing would serve downtown Matthews via North Trade Street and West
John Street. Two new trips to Central Piedmont Community College Levine
Campus would be added. Current service to Sycamore Commons via Northeast
Parkway would be discontinued. This proposal is under consideration due to low
ridership and customer requests to serve downtown Matthews.
80X Concord Express
Routes 98 and 99 North Mecklenburg Village
The proposed routing would discontinue service to Target / Home Depot Park and
Ride in Concord / Kannapolis. Service would instead start and end at the
Big Lots Park and Ride in Concord. This proposal is under consideration
to address future construction projects and improve on-time performance.
The proposed routing would travel Interstate 485 to Interstate 85 after the
Speedway Park and Ride. Service along North Tryon Street in Charlotte
would be discontinued. This proposal is under consideration to address
future construction projects and improve on-time performance.
Proposed service changes would replace the Cheddar’s Park and Ride with a new
Park and Ride at IKEA. Proposed routing would serve the IKEA Park and
Ride directly on and off Interstate 85. This proposal is under
consideration to improve on-time performance.
Reverse trips to Concord Mills Mall via the University Area are proposed to be
discontinued. Service to this area would be maintained by Route 11 North
Tryon. This proposal is under consideration, due to low ridership on the
reverse express trips.
Proposed routing for Route 98 McCoy Road
includes replacing current service to North County Regional Library with
service to Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) Merancas
Campus. The service to CPCC would operate on Statesville Road and
Verhoeff Road between the Park and Ride and CPCC. Route 98 bus service
between the Park and Ride and the Library along Statesville Road would be
discontinued. Service in this area would be maintained with Routes 77X
and 99. Service between the Park and Ride and McCoy Road via Gilead Road
would remain unchanged. Route 98 would continue to provide deviated bus
service within ¾ mile from the proposed bus route.
Proposed routing for Route 99 Huntersville/CPCC includes replacing current
service along Verhoeff Road would be replaced with Route 98. Service to
Bryton Town Center (Wal-Mart) would become part of the regular route via
Alexanderana Road and Old Statesville Road. Current service on
Statesville Road between Verhoeff Road and Alexanderana Road would be
discontinued. Service to North Mecklenburg High School would be
maintained. CPCC would be served indirectly by new bus stops on Old Statesville
Road, about a quarter-mile walk from campus. The current bus stops on
Verhoeff Road would be served directly by the proposed adjustments to Route 98.
Route 99 would continue to provide deviated bus service within ¾ mile from the
proposed bus route.
