CATS makes Temporary changes to Route 39 Eastway to accommodate construction

Charlotte, NC - Beginning Monday, March 24,  the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) will make adjustments to Route 39 Eastway due to construction of the light rail line.  Crews must close the Eastway Bridge for several months in order to make way for the LYNX Blue Line, which will operate below the bridge. Service between Uptown and The Plaza will remain the same. However, from Eastway Drive, the route will now turn left on Sugar Creek Road, right on The Plaza, right onto Eastway Drive and then resume regular routing. Route 39 bus service north of The Plaza will be discontinued. “This change to Route 39 allows service on the east side of North Tryon Street to continue while Route 11 North Tryon can accommodate customers that need to travel further north,” said Larry Kopf, Chief Operations Planning Officer.  Access to local traffic will remain.

Other routes changes include:

2 Ashley Road - Service along Mint Street and West Summit Avenue to Freedom Drive will be discontinued. The route will instead follow West Morehead Street between Bank of America Stadium and Freedom Drive. Trips to DMSI will be modified to provide more direct service via Alleghany Street to Wilkinson Boulevard.  DMSI trips will only serve Carrowmore Place on the return trip inbound. All other trips are unchanged, continuing to turn around near Harding High School.

29 UNCC/SouthPark – Service in the University area will be modified. Northbound service will depart from UNC Charlotte, follow University City Boulevard back to W.T. Harris Boulevard, turn left on IBM Drive and end at the stop on IBM Drive opposite Compatible Way. Hewitt and Wells Fargo will be served by bus stops along IBM Drive. Route 29 will no longer enter the Wells Fargo or the Hewitt campuses. Service along Mallard Creek Church Road and North Tryon Street will be discontinued, but maintained by Route 11 North Tryon.

34 Freedom Drive – CATS will add one earlier trip and one later trip on the Route 34. Service along Walnut Avenue, Sumter Avenue and State Street will be discontinued. Service to these areas will continue to be provided by Route 8 Tuckaseegee Road.

43 Ballantyne –Inbound service will now turn left on Sharon Road West from Park Road at the traffic light. Inbound service along Hamlin Park Drive and Brandon Forest Drive will be discontinued on Route 43. These areas will still be served by Route 19 Park Road.

51 Pineville Matthews – Service to downtown Matthews will be added. Between the park and ride and Highway 51, the route will now follow Sam Newell Road to West John Street. Service to Sycamore Commons via Windsor Square and Northeast Parkway will be discontinued. Service to Windsor Square will be maintained by Route 17 Commonwealth.

80X Concord Express – Service will be adjusted to make fewer stops and follow the newly widened Interstate 85. Three park and ride lots are available for commuters on this route —Concord Big Lots, Charlotte Motor Speedway, and a new lot at IKEA on IKEA Boulevard. Service will be discontinued to the Home Depot Park and Ride, Concord Mills, North Tryon Street, JW Clay Boulevard and Cheddar’s Park and Ride.
