CATS Names Top Bus Operators in Driving Contest
Wimbish Will Compete in International Bus Roadeo
Charlotte, N.C. ─ Bus Operator James Wimbish took top honors today as the winner of the Charlotte Area Transit System’s (CATS) 2014 Bus Operators Roadeo.  Wimbish, a bus operator for nearly 25 years, will represent CATS in May when he competes in the 2014 International Bus Roadeo in Kansas City, Missouri.
Bus Operators Mike Gorzkowski and Lonny Earnhardt finished second and third respectively in the Bus Operations Division (BOD) Roadeo. Wimbish, Gorzkowski and Earnhardt will represent CATS in the North Carolina State Bus Roadeo competition in Charlotte this April.
Special Transportation Service (STS) driver Henry Minnet placed first in the paratransit competition. Finishing second and third in the STS competition were Gregory Girault
and Twanda Buckhalter. They, along with Minnet, will also compete at the North Carolina State Bus Roadeo event here in Charlotte next month. STS transports individuals with disabilities certified as eligible according to the Americans with Disability Act (ADA).
Friends and families watched as bus operators demonstrate their driving and safety skills. BOD operators navigated a 40-foot bus and STS operators navigated a paratransit vehicle through an obstacle course in a safe and timely manner. The course consisted of different driving elements including passenger stops, serpentine turns and backing maneuvers. Drivers were also judged on their professional appearance, pre-trip inspection and a written safety test.
