Immediate Release ─ April 1, 2013
Bus Operator Lonny Earnhardt continues his reign at the top as the winner of the Charlotte Area Transit System’s (CATS) 2013 Bus Operators Roadeo. Earnhardt, a Bus Operations Division (BOD) bus operator with 34 years of experience, will represent CATS in the 2013 International Bus Roadeo in Indianapolis, IN next month.
Kim Wallace and Carmen Aleman finished second and third respectively in the BOD competition. Wallace and Aleman will move ahead to represent CATS in the NC State Bus Roadeo competition this month in Wilmington.
Special Transportation Service (STS) driver Henry Minnet was also a repeat first place winner. Finishing second and third in the STS competition were Philip Underwood and Cindi James. They, along with Minnet, will compete at the NC State Bus Roadeo event in Wilmington. STS transports individuals with disabilities certified as eligible according to the Americans with Disability Act (ADA). Larry Boyd and Camille Lewis came in first and second place in the competition for operators from Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services.
Roadeo participants put their safe driving skills through a series of challenging tests. BOD operators navigated a 40-foot long bus and STS operators navigated a paratransit vehicle through an obstacle course in a safe and timely manner. The course consisted of different driving elements including passenger stops, winding turns and reversing maneuvers. Drivers were also judged on their professional appearance, pre-trip inspection and a written safety test.
