CATS Announces 2013 Light Rail Rodeo Winners
Immediate Release ─ April 19, 2013

Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is excited to announce the winners of its Fifth Annual Light Rail Rodeo. Light rail operators and mechanics had a chance to demonstrate first-hand the skills they use to keep the LYNX Blue Line running safely and on time. The Rodeo took place on Saturday, April 13 at the South Boulevard Light Rail Facility.

The first place winner in the light rail operator competition was Kevin Hooks who placed for the first time.  Second place went to Metro Coston, a repeat winner. The light rail operators were judged on a written test, professional appearance, pre-trip inspection, measured stops and operating procedures out on the rail line.
Top honors in the rail maintenance competition went to Charles Truong, who moved up the ranks from second place in last year’s competition. Second and third place winners were Eugene Capote and Patrick Mills who are both repeat top three winners. Rail mechanics underwent a written test, tool identification, defective components search, circuit troubleshooting, proper fastening of nuts and bolts, measuring of rail wheels and knowledge of mechanical properties and formulas.

Winners will now advance to represent CATS at the International Rail Rodeo in Philadelphia, PA on May 30 – June 2. The rodeo is a competitive test that measures the safety knowledge and skills held by light rail operator and maintenance teams.
