CATS' Special Transportation Service Named Safest in State
Immediate Release - May 29, 2012

The North Carolina Public Transportation Association (NCPTA) has awarded the Charlotte Area Transit System’s (CATS) Special Transportation Service (STS) top honors as the safest Urban Dial-A-Ride system in the state for the fourth year in a row.  STS buses provided 229,946 rides and traveled 2.8 million miles in FY2011 while maintaining a preventable accident rate of 0.43 per 100,000 miles.  This performance indicator for paratransit services exceeds industry standards.

“This statewide recognition highlights the efforts of our Operators and the safe service they provide every day to our customers,” said Carolyn Flowers, CEO of CATS.  “This attention to safety has helped CATS dramatically decrease its accident rate by 71 percent systemwide since 2000.”

STS provides door-to-door transit services within three-quarters of a mile of all local fixed route buses routes during each individual route’s hours and days of operation for individuals with disabilities certified as eligible according to the Americans with Disability Act (ADA).
