BLE 36th Street Station

​Station artists Ruth Ava Lyons and Paul Sires played a pivotal role in the transformation of the NoDa neighborhood into the arts district it is today. They honor and embrace this process of regeneration in their integrated art elements for the 36th Street Station, presenting NoDa as an idea, an area always in flux.

Two stylistic themes appear throughout the station, vegetal images that symbolize the area’s growth and industrial images of mills and factories that reference its past. The organic influence takes the form of a lotus and other more abstracted flowers and leaves, appearing in the windscreens and the column cladding in red and yellow.

A large mosaic will adorn the wall of the ramp leading up to the platform, a 7’ square image of a lotus overlaying a long band of black and white symbols growth and industry. The lotus mosaic borrows composition and color from Lyons’ original paintings, though translated into tile it conveys the message that many parts must work together make a beautiful whole. ​
 
Before ascending the platform, visitors will encounter one of Paul Sires’ custom granite benches, carved with patterns of leaves and vines and polished to a high shine.

The station platform will be populated with bright hues, especially among the column cladding and windscreens, whose supporting steel structures will be painted a vivid red. The artists also chose to order unique benches in a variety of different colors to replace the standard version.

 
While Paul, a sculptor, and Ruth, a painter, have very distinct creative styles, their designs culminate in an undefinable, eclectic space whose greatest message is the beauty that emerges when different elements work together for a greater good.
Artist Bios

Ruth Ava Lyons and Paul Sires have created art throughout the southeast both together and independently. Ruth Ava Lyons’ paintings are in the collections of numerous corporations and museums including the metropolitan Museum of Art, Bank of America, and the New Orleans Museum of Art. Paul Sires has designed and fabricated public art for the federal reserve bank of Richmond, VA, the Morgan Square Revitalization in Spartanburg, SC, and the Charlotte Bobcats Arena in Charlotte, among others. Ruth Ava Lyons and Paul Sires earned their MFAs from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan and their BFAs, Cum Laude, from Kent State University in Ohio.
