Hyong Yi

​Hyong Yi has joined the City of Charlotte as an Assistant City Manager. Since 2004, he has been Mecklenburg County’s Management and Budget Director, responsible for strategic planning, developing the County’s annual $1.4 billion operating budget, and the capital budget. The department also helps the County develop its long-range plans and evaluates the performance of County programs and services.

Yi began his full-time public service career in 1995 with the District of Columbia Financial Responsibility and Management Assistance Authority, working on public education issues. During his long tenure with the District of Columbia government, he served as the Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff for the Mayor, Director of Cost Analysis for the Office of Budget and Planning. Prior to joining Mecklenburg County, he was Director of Operations and Planning for the District of Columbia’s Office of Budget and Planning, responsible for implementing performance-based budgeting and other performance and management initiatives to improve the decision-making process for resource allocation.

He received his master's degree in public administration and a bachelor's degree in political science from the American University in Washington, D.C. He is married with two children.
