City Manager Curt Walton
City Manager Curt Walton
In June 2007, Curt Walton was selected by City Council as City Manager for the City of Charlotte, North Carolina. Walton served as Assistant City Manager and the Deputy City Manager for Internal Operations from 2002 to 2007 and was responsible for the City’s transportation, planning and technology initiatives. He oversaw special projects such as the Charlotte Bobcats Arena and development of CharMeck 311, the City and Mecklenburg County’s 24-hour customer service line.  
 
Walton started his career with the City of Charlotte in 1986 as a Budget and Evaluation Analyst and moved up the ranks to become Budget and Evaluation Manager and Interim Key Business Executive for Business Support Services. In 1996, he became Budget and Evaluation Director before his promotion to Assistant City Manager in 2002. He also worked as Assistant Town Administrator for the Town of Wake Forest, NC from 1982 to 1986. Curt was Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms in the North Carolina House of Representatives and interned as an Administrative Officer at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities prior to his service in Wake Forest.
 
He received bachelor of arts degrees in Political Science and Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed a master of Urban Administration degree (now Public Administration) from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1982. 
 
Walton is a member of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), the North Carolina City and County Managers Association, and served on the board of the North Carolina Local Government Budget Association. His professional development includes the Public Executive Leadership Academy and the Municipal Administration Program at UNC-Chapel Hill, Leadership for the 21st Century through Harvard University, Leadership Charlotte, and the Center for Intentional Leadership.
 
He has previously served on the Arts & Science Council Board of Directors, School of Public Administration Advisory Board at UNC-Charlotte, the United Way of the Central Carolinas Allocation panel, and Matthews United Methodist Church Administrative Council. Currently he serves on the board of directors for Charlotte Center City Partners, Levine Museum of the New South, the Champions for Education (Wells Fargo Championship), Queen City Forward, the Community Catalyst Fund, and the United Way of Central Carolinas Board.
 
He lives in Charlotte with his wife, Clare. They have one daughter.
