Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Events

Each year, the Community Relations Committee helps organize and/or promote several events to honor the lasting legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK), including the following:

  • A memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony at Marshall Park in uptown Charlotte
  • An MLK Day Parade that runs along North Tryon Street from 9th Street to Martin Luther King Boulevard.
  • The annual MLK Prayer Breakfast sponsored by the McCrory YMCA
  • The MLK National Day of Celebration, which includes a keynote speaker, scholarship presentations to the winners of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools MLK writing contest, and presentation of the prestigious Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Medallion Award.

The passion and generosity of many volunteers, sponsors and private donors make it possible to bring these events to the community without any tax dollars and minimal staff support.
