Youth Employment and Summer Jobs

 Total Federal Funding: $1.2 billion
 Estimated N.C. Funding: $21.5 million (N.C. Department of Commerce)
 Estimated Local Funding: $1.5 million for Charlotte-Mecklenburg through June 30, 2011.
 Administering Agency: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Workforce Development Board
 Overview: Program provides employment training and summer jobs to eligible youth. Funds can be used to provide direct wages to youth, eliminating this cost to local employers. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Workforce Development Board has subcontracted with four community agencies who are working to identify eligible youth participants and to find host employers. The goals of the program are to provide summer jobs (including short-term paid work experiences) for approximately 350 youth.
 Eligibility: Low-income youth with at least one of the following barriers to employment:
Deficient in basic literacy skills
School dropout
Homeless, runaway or foster child
Pregnant or parenting
Ex-offender
Is an individual (including a youth with a disability) who requires additional assistance to complete an educational program or to secure and hold employment.
 Local Funding Availability: $1.5 million available by the state in May 2009.
