A Rail Improvement & Safety Program Project
This project will close North Church Street at the CSX Railroad. The crossing is being closed to improve safety for motorists and train crews by eliminating the potential for crashes. Also, the CSX Railroad is being lowered to go under the Norfolk Southern Railroad just west of the crossing and the grade of the track will be lowered where Church Street currently crosses it.

Currently, the grade crossing is periodically blocked for yard switching activities. These blockages will increase over time as CSX expands its Pinoca Yard in northwest Charlotte resulting in an increase in intermodal train traffic. Many of these trains will be over two miles long and would block the crossing for even longer periods.
Improvements will be made to the street system to maintain adequate access to businesses along North Church Street near the road closure.
The crossing closure is anticipated to occur by November 2013.
Objectives:
- Reconfigure a portion of Church Street to allow two-way traffic for better access to businesses from I-277 (Brookshire Boulevard)
- Extend Wadsworth Place from Tryon Street to Church Street for maintaining access from southbound Tryon Street to maintain access from tryon Street to businesses along Church Street.
- Install a traffic signal at Tryon Street and Wadsworth Place to improve traffic flow.
- Construct u-turn areas on both sides of Church Street at the CSX Railroad.
Cost: To Be Determined
Please note that the project cost will include all costs associated with the project such as planning and design, acquiring the right-of-way, utility relocation, design fees, construction, signalization, landscaping and permits.
