This transportation project improved existing median on South Boulevard to improve vehicle travel and increase safety for left turning vehicles.  Additionally, this project provides continuous sidewalk on South Boulevard from Tyvola Road to Archdale Drive, better facilitating pedestrian traffic. Some road widening will occur in order to accomplish this goal.

Objectives:
  • Alter median layout for improved traffic flow and increased safety
  • Improve existing sidewalk conditions for pedestrians
  • Beautify roadway by incorporating landscaped medians
  • Widen where necessary to accommodate median additions
  • Overall, improve the appearance and use of the South Boulevard corridor

Drought Halts Landscaping

Cost:  $4,150,000
Please note that this figure includes all costs associated with the project such as planning and design, acquiring the right of way, utility relocation, staff fees, construction and landscaping.

This project was managed through a four stage process.  Click here  to learn how City projects are selected, designed and built.  City staff designed this project in-house taking into consideration the requirements and recommendations of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Additionally, this project took into consideration the design of similar projects along South Boulevard to ensure a similar appearance and a smooth transition between projects.

Results of Planning and Design were:
  • Alter median design to improve vehicle flow and safety
  • Include landscaping in all medians with a width of four feet or greater
  • Improve all sidewalks to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards
  • Include concrete aprons at all U-turn locations to facilitate safer turning
