A Transportation Bond Project
This project is part of the Farm-to-Market (FTM) program that studies and improves roads in developing areas to reduce traffic congestion, improve safety and accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users. This project will make improvements to Tyvola Road West. Potential features may include:
- Sidewalks with planting strips
- Bicycle facilities
- Curb and gutter with improved drainage
- Turning lanes
- Median islands
A public workshop was held in September 2009. Attendees voiced concerns about the lack of pedestrian and bicycling options and the outdated reversible lane system on Tyvola Road. Input from this meeting helped the project team develop the following concepts:
Tyvola Road between South Tryon and Yorkmont Road
- Two travel lanes in each direction
- Raised median with turn lanes
- Replace sidewalk on one side with a multi-use path for cyclists and pedestrians.
Tyvola Road between Rebecca Avenue and West Boulevard
- Widen to a three-lane cross section (one lane each direction and a two-way center turn lane)
- Bicycle lanes
- On-street parking
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to budget constraints, funding for the design and construction of the Tyvola Road FTM project was deferred by the City of Charlotte. The project is currently on hold pending the availability of future funding.
The Engineering & Property Management (E&PM) project team will manage the Tyvola Road West Project through a four stage process. Click here to learn how City projects are selected, designed and built.
