Mayor Clodfelter shares economic impact of LYNX Blue Line

Mayor Dan Clodfelter spoke during a special ceremony for the LYNX Blue Line Station Capacity project June 9, the latest in the ongoing construction of the CATS light rail system. City Council members David Howard and Patsy Kinsey were also on hand to mark the start of the expansion project. 
 
An $18 million federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER III) grant will fund the projects of several station extensions.  The mayor highlighted the importance of governmental cooperation with an emphasis on transportation.
 
“These achievements can only be accomplished through a shared vision of a balanced transportation system of public transit and roads and the continued support from our local, state and congressional leaders, the Chamber, local businesses and the community as a whole on advancing this vision,” said Clodfelter.
 
The event was at one of the sites of the station expansion, the Lynx Stonewall Station on E. Stonewall Street behind the Westin hotel. With the Blue Line Extension, set to open in 2017, stations will see more riders and will be able to support three-car trains.
 
The LYNX Rapid Transit Services first began operations in 2007 and has plans for expansion in future years to come, including the Northeast Corridor and CityLYNX Gold Line which are currently under construction.  The light rail serves Uptown and South End Charlotte areas and reaches the Pineville city limits at its current southwestern end point.
 
“The Charlotte region will continue to grow; today we are the 16th largest city in the country and recently were recognized as one of the top ten fastest growing cities in the United States,” said Clodfelter.  “We need to be prepared to handle this regional growth.  Investments like this one today, expanding platforms to accommodate 3-Car Trains, will provide the infrastructure to better manage future growth over the next 50 years.”
