J.H. Weddington (1895-1897)
Public Service:
Prior to becoming Charlotte's Mayor, Weddington served as a Charlotte alderman.   Weddington also served on the Mecklenburg County Commission, and was its chairman three times.

Personal:
Weddington was a hardware dealer.

  • Homes in suburban Dilworth became available, spurred by the development of the trolley.
  • Atherton Mill (developed by D.A. Tompkins) was the first textile mill to be located beyond the downtown area. (Today Atherton Mill has been restored and is the home to retail shops, offices and restaurants.)
  • Charlotte National Bank (forerunner to Wachovia/Wells Fargo) was organized.
  • Elizabeth College was built at Elizabeth Avenue and Hawthorne Lane. The college is now a part of Presbyterian Hospital.
  • Belk Brothers Company opened for business.
