Prior to becoming Mayor of Charlotte in 1899, McCall had not previously held any public office.

Charlotte Pipe and Foundry opened in 1900.
J.B. Ivey Company opened for business at North Tryon and Sixth streets. (The Ivey building today has been converted into residential condominiums.)
Charlotte saw its first automobiles in November, 1900. These early auto were called "locomobiles" because they ran with steam engines.
