Richard Vinroot (1991-1995)

Public Service:
Vinroot served three terms as an at-large City Council representative before seeking the Mayor's seat.  He served three terms as Charlotte's Mayor. He later ran unsuccessfully for governor of North Carolina.

Personal:
Vinroot played basketball at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He is a Vietnam War veteran.  A Morehead scholar, Vinroot is an attorney, receiving his degree from UNC School of Law.

During his Administration:

  • On October 24, Bank of America dedicates its 60 story skyscraper, making it the tallest building between Philadelphia and Atlanta.
  • The Blumenthal Performing Arts Center opened in uptown Charlotte.
  • National Football League selected Charlotte for an expansion team, resulting in the Carolina Panthers. The team played its first home game in Ericsson Stadium (The name has since been changed to Bank of America Stadium) on September 2, 1996.
