Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union forces at Appomattox, Virginia on April 9, 1865.
Abraham Lincoln assassinated April 14, 1865.
Jefferson Davis and the Confederate Cabinet held its last full meeting in at the home of Williams Phifer on North Tryon Street in Charlotte, April 20, 1865.
Union troops occupied a dispirited city on May 7, 1865, and Charlotte entered the Reconstruction following the end of the Civil War.
Biddle Institute (now Johnson C. Smith University) was established by a contribution of $1,900 on land donated by William R. Myers.
AME Zion Church of Philadelphia helped start a congregation in Charlotte.
