Sue Myrick

Public Service:
Sue Myrick began her public life as executive secretary to the Mayor of Alliance, Ohio. In Charlotte, she served on Charlotte's City Council before defeating Harvey Gantt for the Mayor's seat.  She currently represents the state's 9th Congressional district in Washington, DC.

Personal:
While in Harrisburg Virginia, Myrick was an on-air television personality.  She and her husband founded an advertising firm.  Myrick and Clement Dowd are Charlotte's only former Mayors to serve in Congress.

  • The Charlotte Coliseum opened on Tyvola Road extension in August of 1988. On November 4, 1988 the National Basketball Association team, the Charlotte Hornets,  played their first game to a sold out Coliseum.
  • The Homeless Shelter was established in uptown Charlotte.
  • The uptown branch of the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County reopened after two years of renovations to expand the facility.
  • Charlotte voters passed bonds to build additional roads or to make improvements on existing ones.
  • On September 22, 1989, Hurricane Hugo hit Charlotte with 87 mile an hour winds uprooting huge trees and knocking down power lines. It took Charlotte months to remove debris from the downed trees.
