Peter Marshall Brown 1901-1905)
Public Service:
Prior to serving as Charlotte's Mayor, Brown was the chairman of the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners.

Personal:
Brown was the business partner of J.H. Weddington who was also a Mayor of Charlotte. They owned a hardware store.

  • American Trust Company (a forerunner of Bank of America) was founded.
  • The first Coca-Cola was bottled in the Carolinas on April 15, 1902. It was sold to a customer in Charlotte.
  • The North Charlotte neighborhood developed to be near textile employers.
  • December 17, 1903 changed the way people travel. Orville and Wilber Wright took their first airplane flight from Kill Devil Hills on North Carolina's Outer Banks.
  • Duke Power was organized in 1904 by James B. Duke and W. States Lee.
  • Electric signs appeared in the city.
  • Andrew Carnegie gave $25,000 to Charlotte for a public library.
  • Charlotte got a pro baseball team.
  • The Medical Society was organized.
  • Charlotte voters made the city the first in the state to become dry. The vote closed 26 saloons.
