(Charlotte, N.C.) -- The City of Charlotte’s Mayor’s Youth Employment Program (MYEP) will host a Kickoff Luncheon to celebrate the start of the eight week summer internship program on Wednesday, June 15 from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm at Discovery Place (301 N. Tryon Street). The program has reached a new milestone with 240 students being put to work this summer in an internship program designed to give students valuable hands-on job experience and mentoring in a career of interest. The local host employers will have the opportunity to meet their interns at the MYEP Kickoff Luncheon.
The MYEP provides internships for at-risk youth in the public, non-profit and private sectors. Youth are referred by program partners: Communities In Schools (CIS), Right Moves For Youth (RMFY), and Goodwill Industries of Southern Piedmont. Students must be 16 -18 years of age and currently enrolled in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. All applicants must:
- Participate in one of the referring in school programs (CIS or RMFY)
- Complete 15 hours of career development training prior to job placement
- Successfully complete an application and background check/drug screening
- Demonstrate work experience or participation in extracurricular activities
- Complete a 500 word essay detailing why they want to participate in the MYEP
- Obtain a professional/personal reference
