Northeast Corridor – Blue Line Extension
Overview and Project Update:
The Blue Line Extension connects with the Blue Line at 9th Street in Center City and extends through the North Davidson (NoDa) area to UNC Charlotte. The line was originally envisioned to extend beyond UNC Charlotte to I-485, however, on January 26, 2011, the Metropolitan Transit Commission unanimously approved changes to the BLE project to reduce project costs and ensure its financial feasibility. Current plans call for the service to operate generally within the existing railroad right of way from Center City to NoDa and then remain within the North Tryon Street (US 29) right of way from Old Concord Road north to UNC-Charlotte. Eleven stations are now planned, including six with park and ride facilities and two stations on the UNC-Charlotte campus. (Stations at Mallard Creek Church and I-485/North Tryon were eliminated as part of the January 26th decision.)
Other changes include surface parking lots rather than parking decks at the Sugar Creek station, elimination of park and ride lots at the Tom Hunter and McCullough stations and a larger parking deck at the University City Boulevard station.
Station area plans were completed for four of these stations – Rocky River, City Boulevard, Harris/North Tryon and University City – as part of the University City Area Plan. However, as part of the Preliminary Engineering work, the Rocky River station was renamed “University City Boulevard”, the City Boulevard and Harris/North Tryon stations were combined as one station – McCullough – and the University City station was renamed “JW Clay Boulevard”. Updates to the University City Area Plan will be made to incorporate these changes.
