PED Zoning Review

New Page 1

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Department is considering changes to the development requirements for properties subject to the Pedestrian Overlay District.

The purpose of the Pedestrian Overlay District (PED) is to reestablish an urban fabric by promoting a mixture of uses in a pedestrian-oriented setting of moderate intensity.  The district encourages the reuse of existing buildings that contribute to the unique character or history of the area.  The standards also encourage high quality design, mixed use development, the use of public transit, and development, which complements adjacent neighborhoods.

The Planning Department staff will begin reviewing the Pedestrian Overlay District to gauge how well the district is achieving their intent.  Public involvement will play an important role in this project.  We welcome your participation in the review of the PED standards. The initial meeting was held October 6, 2009.

The purpose of the initial meeting is to review the history and purpose of the PED district.  The meeting concluded with an issue identification exercise to help direct topical areas covered at future meetings.
