Diesel engines are a large source of pollution in Mecklenburg County. Federal standards are cleaning up new engines, but old diesel engines can remain in service for 20 years or more. MCAQ has worked to obtain funding for emission reduction devices to clean up these older engines.

2005 Mobile Source Emission Reduction Grant (North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources)
- $100,000 grant to CMS to install diesel oxidation catalysts on 50 Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Buses and fuel 80 school buses on ultra-low sulfur diesel.
2005 Toyota Supplemental Environmental Project
- Approximately $350,000 grant to CMS to install diesel particulate filters on 40 Charlotte Mecklenburg School buses and operate the buses on ultra-low sulfur diesel.
2005 Duke Energy Gift
- $18,000 grant to CMS to install diesel oxidation catalysts on 20 Charlotte Mecklenburg School buses.
