Light's Out Tool Kit
Promote energy efficiency in early 2012!

The following campaigns have the potential to increase energy efficiency by achieving these two goals:
1) increase the number of lights being turned off in unoccupied workspaces during business hours and
2) increase the number of common area lights being turned off at the end of the day (ex. over cubicle bays, break rooms, and meeting rooms).

Crab, You’re It!

“Crab, You’re It!,” a game designed to help remind people to turn off their workspace lights, is now available to your business or organization! Fiddler crabs are attracted to light making them the perfect mascot for this energy efficiency game! Buckets of plastic crabs are strategically placed around the workspace. If employees leave their offices for more than 15 minutes and forget to turn off their light, a coworker could remind them to turn off their light with a friendly fiddler crab! If employees return to find a crab on their desk, they are “it.” The goal is to get rid of the crab by finding another coworker who needs a reminder to turn off the lights.

Materials provided by Charlotte Area NC Air Awareness:

• The Crab, You’re It! informational sheet explains this fun campaign. This sheet can easily be shared with management to gain management level support of the campaign!
Step-by-step instructions to host the Crab, You’re It! game!
• Example Email Communication (Word Document) that you can copy and paste into an email, just change bold text to information specific for your business.
• Attach this Instructions Card to a Crab mascot or print both sides to use as your Crab.
• If your coworkers are concerned that a dark workspace implies absence, this Door sign can be posted to alleviate that concern.

Adopt-A-Light

A campaign called “Adopt-A-Light” was developed to encourage employees to assume responsibility for common areas (break rooms, copy rooms, halls, etc.) by signing up to “Adopt-A-Light.” These employees that adopt a switch can be entered into a raffle for a prize, like vacation time!
