2016 Property Tax Relief Programs – Now Accepting Applications!

The 2016 filing period is now open for homeowner tax relief programs!  As a homeowner, you may be eligible for property tax relief under one of three programs:  Elderly Homestead Exclusion, Circuit Breaker (for elderly or permanently disabled homeowners), or the Disabled Veterans Homestead Exclusion.  Each program, which is administered by the Mecklenburg County Assessor's Office, has varying requirements and benefits.  To read about these programs, and link to the forms, please click here to visit our Tax Relief page:

The filing period for the above exemptions is from January 1 to June 1 of each year.  After the June 1, 2016 deadline, late applications are accepted and must be approved by the Board of Equalization and Review.

Revaluation
The process of reappraising all properties within the county for tax assessment purposes. It is required at least once every eight years by North Carolina statute. The process has two objectives: value properties at current market prices, and equitably distribute the cost of local government among the property owners.

Reviewing Your Property Value
The following factors are considered when determining your property’s value:
  • Property Characteristics
  • Neighborhood Characteristics
  • Market Characteristics
  • Property Anomalies

NOTE: The owner(s) of record for property taxes are the parties that hold legal title on January 1 of the given tax year.
