Vilma Leake is a Democrat elected to her second term on the Board. A motivational speaker, Leake was elected to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Board of Education in 1997 and served as vice chair of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) Policy Committee. She serves on the NC Association of County Commissioners Public Education Steering Committee and the National Association of Counties (NACo) National Board of Large Urban Counties Caucus Steering Committee.
Commissioner Leake graduated from Livingstone College with a bachelor’s degree, and earned a master’s degree from the University of Buffalo in New York. She received her principalship certification from UNC-Chapel Hill and has completed all course work for her doctorate at the University of San Francisco.
