Order of the Hornet
Former Commissioners Harold Cogdell, Jr. and Jennifer Roberts were inducted into the
Order of the Hornet. The Order of the Hornet was established in 1972. It is bestowed by the Board of County Commissioners on those who have displayed valor or high order of service uniquely and specifically to the citizens of Mecklenburg County. This is the highest honor the Board bestows for service to the community. Former Commissioners Neil C. Cooksey and Jim Pendergraph were previously inducted. Neil C. Cooksey was inducted on October 16, 2012 and Jim Pendergraph on November 5, 2008.
The Board held a public hearing and then adopted a resolution granting approval for Mecklenburg County to submit an application for the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Community Transportation Grant for Fiscal Year 2013-2014. Annually, the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services requests a public hearing to receive comments regarding the Community Transportation Grant Application. This North Carolina Department of Transportation grant provides funding for the administrative and capital requirements of the Mecklenburg County Department Social Services’ Mecklenburg Transportation System Unit of the Services for Adults Division. This grant is to provide financial assistance for the support of public transportation services in nonurbanized areas.
The Board received an update on the status of this greenway reach and the related relief sewer project. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department has planned for years to install a relief sewer along McAlpine Creek. The 12-mile project is being completed in phases. Recently, Phase 3 was awarded for construction and will impact Upper McAlpine Creek Greenway in mid-late 2013. This greenway is one of the oldest in the County system. Park and Recreation Department staff has been working with CMUD to plan for the future of this greenway. The new greenway design must consider changes in environmental regulations, the need to provide an accessible surface, the need to reduce long-term maintenance cost and the ability to provide a quality greenway for many years.
