County Manager Recruitment Plan
At its dinner meeting, the Board discussed the process for hiring a new County Manager. A search committee will identify candidates which will be evaluated by a Board subcommittee consisting of four members. The subcommittee will select finalists and the full Board will select a new manager by October 15, 2013.
Park and Recreation Commission Annual Report
The Park and Recreation Commission (PRC) presented their annual report to the Board. The report included information on the department's return on investment, trends and a list of major initiatives which include:
- 5-year update to the 2008 Master Plan
- Romare Bearden Park grand opening
- Hats Off to Park/ Newtown Memorial playground
- 32 capital projects from the 2008 Bond Referendum
- Continued land acquisition
County Assessor Recruitment
Interim County Manager Bobbie Shields indicated during the Manager's Report that he expects to make a recommendation on the new tax assessor at the June 18 meeting.
Medical Examiner's Office Funding
The Board received a report on the Medical Examiner's Office funding and its relationship with the State of North Carolina. The Board adopted a resolution indicating that the County will not provide funding to subsidize the State's proportionate share of the cost of the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office services as a regional facility.
The MeckLINK budget amendment was selected for discussion during the consent items portion of the meeting. The item concerned the recognition and appropriation of additional state funds to be allocated to the department. During the discussion, commissioners expressed concern over the State's potential takeover of MeckLINK, which if approved would mean the department would be managed by a separate authority beginning in 2014.
