Internal Trades Inspector

Description:
Responsibilities include answering questions regarding North Carolina State Building Codes, plan review procedures, special inspections, permitting issues, contractor licensing requirements and provide guidance for customers on a variety of other commercial construction issues.  Customer contacts include contractors, engineers, architects, realtors, lawyers and the general public. Questions come in via phone, walk-in, internet, fax, and email.   Maintain statistical information on daily customer contacts to include the number of contacts, type and method used to satisfy customer needs.   Must have excellent customer service skills, knowledge of NC State Building Codes, and the ability to prepare clear, concise and accurate reports and present them orally and in writing. Needs to have general knowledge of legal practices and procedures for enforcing NC State Building Codes, knowledge of NC General Statutes and laws regulating contractors and professional designers, and general knowledge of Mecklenburg County Departments and Services relating to commercial construction.

Bachelor's Degree in Construction, Engineering, or related field and five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Licensing Requirements: Must obtain Level III inspector certification (in the specified trade) through the North Carolina code officials qualification board within one year of hire.  Multiple trade certifications a plus.   

 

Plans Review Facilitator

Description:
Communicates information and coordinates processes associated with the Plans Review program. Processes applications/fees, coordinates requests with department staff and external customers, maintains program database, generates various reports, assures final permitting process. Four year degree and one (1) year of administrative, business or construction experience or two year degree and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience or High School Diploma and five (5) years of progressively responsible related experience. Oral and written communication skills, customer service and organizational skills. Knowledge of construction related management and administrative policies, procedures and method is preferred. Must successfully complete and pass a Level I Standard Building Inspector class within 1 year.

 

Mechanical/Plumbing Plans Examiner

Description: Examines plans and specifications for compliance with North Carolina state building codes.  Makes decisions or judgments on the interpretation of state building codes, approves or disapproves construction documents (plans, specifications, calculations) and communicates results to design professionals orally or in writing.  Provides field inspections as necessary, participates in submissions of code to both state and model code organizations as needed, and organizes and attends project pre-reviews with designers.  Works in a team environment without direct supervision, keeps management informed of unusual problem situations during the plan review process from plan submittal through final project approval.

Bachelor's degree in engineering and five years of experience in the design/construction of  commercial buildings or five years experience as a level three code official or equivalent combination of education and experience in design or construction.  Supervisory experience as a construction project manager or design office manager or licensed P.E. or Architect is a plus.  Must obtain Level III inspector certification (in the specified trade) through the North Carolina code officials qualification board within one year of hire.  Multiple trade certifications a plus.  Requires a valid Driver's License.  Must obtain and maintain a Mecklenburg County Driver's Permit.

 

Electrical Plans Examiner

Residential Plans Reviewer

Description: Examines the architectural and structural plans and specifications of one and two family residential projects and townhouses for compliance with the NC State Residential Code prior to permit issuance and construction. Performs complete review of all complex structural plans submitted for building permit approval.

 

Mechanical Inspector

Description: Enforces the NC State Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes. Assures the health and safety of the public by inspecting renovations, installations and/or alterations in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings and other structures. Must have the ability to obtain Mechanical level III pre-certification from NC Code Officials Qualification Board (prior to interview) and shall obtain a Mechanical Level III Standard Certificate within one year of employment.

 

Mechanical/Plumbing Inspector (IBA)

Description: Enforces the NC State Building Codes. Assures the health and safety of the public by inspecting  renovations, installations and/or alterations in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings and other structures.  Must have the ability to obtain Mechanical and Plumbing level III pre-certification from NC Code Officials Qualification Board (prior to interview) and shall obtain a Mechanical and Plumbing Level III Standard Certificate within one year of employment.
