Purpose
More than 200 organizations nationwide collect cell phones for fund-raising purposes. The Women's Commission program is different in that it tries to give the phones to domestic violence victims through the commission's own services, the Shelter for Battered Women, Victim Assistance, the Department of Social Services' Youth & Family Services and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's domestic violence unit.
With a donated phone, a domestic violence victim (or a potential victim) can call 911 in an emergency. Most cell phones are programmed to call 911, regardless of whether the user has purchased a service plan or not. The phone simply needs to be fully charged.
For more information on the effects of domestic violence in our community, call the Mecklenburg County Women's Commission at 704-336-3210 or The Shelter For Battered Women at 704-332-2513.

John Grosso, 14,
collected 22 old-used cell
phones during the 2011
Wells Fargo Student Drive

My name is John Grosso, I am a 14 year old student at Pine Lake Preparatory School and need to complete 40 hours of community service a year. I have helped out at a local church wrapping gifts for the needy, I have helped clean up around Latté Plantation and I have even done some clean ups around a local garbage company all for community service hours.
My mom is always looking for things we could do to help out when she came across your website. I looked it over and figured that it can’t be so hard to collect old cell phones from people and to think that by doing so I could be helping, possibly saving someone from domestic violence I jumped on the opportunity.
I printed out some information as to who I am, what I was looking for and the reason why, slipped them into some mailboxes and started getting calls from people to pick up their old phone. In 2 weeks I have collected 22 phones which is almost 5 hours of community service. It’s an easy community service program and it makes you feel really good knowing that you’re helping so many women who are in domestic violence situation.
