 Legislative Update

The Mecklenburg legislative delegation held their first Raleigh meeting of the session on Thursday to ask questions about local proposals and gauge support for legislation. We are confident that legislation will be introduced to achieve all of the board’s goals, and while there were questions about Mecklenburg’s legislative priorities, there did not appear to be opposition to any of the goals.

The next step in the process will be for County staff and other interested parties to work with General Assembly staff to craft legislation that accomplishes the goals of our legislative agenda. We will then work with our delegation to identify sponsors to introduce and carry forward the legislation.

2014 State of the County Health Report is Available

In North Carolina, the state requires each local health department to conduct a Community Health Assessment (CHA) every four years for accreditation and as part of its consolidated contract. During the years between health assessments, health directors submit an abbreviated State of the County Health report (SOTCH).

In Mecklenburg County, this report consists of an overview of selected health indicators presented in tables and charts. Sections include information on demographics, maternal, child and infant health and leading causes of morbidity and mortality.

The report also highlights local programs and initiatives that are making progress in addressing chronic disease prevention, mental health, access to care, and violence prevention, the top four health issues as identified by residents in the 2013 CHA.

You can view the report here.
