Active Shooter Training

The County is now offering Active Shooter Training. In partnership with County Security, CMPD officers will conduct training sessions at County facilities to educate employees on the proper steps to take if a shooter is ever on the premises. These classes are offered as part of the County’s Workplace Violence Prevention and Intervention Program, an initiative to ensure that we have the safest work environment possible.

Employees can sign up for a session through the County’s Intranet site.

Sheriff’s Office employees are excluded from this training.

For more information, contact Chad Harris at 980-314-2505 or Chad.Harris@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.

Winter Weather Response

I would like to thank all of our County employees for their efforts in ensuring the safety of residents during the recent winter storm.

On Friday, as snow and ice began to fall, Public Information employees quickly communicated closings and cancelations as well as important safety tips via Twitter, Facebook and www.MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.

The County also opened a Warming Station at the Homeless Resource Center, 618 N. College St. Nearly 120 residents were able to get warm drinks and snacks while avoiding the freezing temperatures.

On Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning, Asset and Facility Management employees helped  clear icy areas at parks, recreation centers and other County facilities.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg to Conduct Annual Homeless Point in Time Count

This week, more than 125 volunteers will take to Charlotte’s streets, soup kitchens and homeless camps to identify individuals who are living without shelter as part of the annual Point in Time (PIT) Count. From Wednesday evening on Jan. 27 through Thursday evening on Jan. 28, volunteers will administer a brief survey of each homeless person and also share winter weather items.

Volunteers and agency providers need assistance locating homeless individuals and families. Citizens in Charlotte-Mecklenburg who know where there are homeless camps or people sleeping on the streets are asked to complete a community referral form with detailed information on the location.

The Community Referral Form can be at www.housingfirstcharmeck.org/referrals.

A PIT count is required annually by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and is intended to provide a snapshot of how many people are sheltered in homeless programs and unsheltered on any given night.

More information can be found on www.mecklenburgcountync.gov.
