I wanted to inform you that the parking lot at 701 East Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (former Board of Education Center) will close for construction beginning on Monday, April 11, 2016.
Planned improvements include lighting repairs and removal of accessory structures. The lot will not be available for public parking during the construction period.
Details will be provided on the lot’s re-opening at a later date. Active Shooter Training Update
I recently had the opportunity to attend one of Mecklenburg County’s Active Shooter training sessions. These classes are offered as part of the County’s Workplace Violence Prevention and Intervention Program - an initiative to ensure that we have the safest work environment possible.
I was very impressed with the course, which covers the proper steps to take if an active shooter incident occurs at a County facility. The feedback from employees who have taken the course has also been very positive.Since the program’s launch in January, more than 1,200 employees have signed up for the class.
More sessions are planned at various County facilities this spring.

As you know, Mecklenburg County is partnering with the City of Charlotte and Partners for Parks to organize the inaugural Open Streets 704 on Sunday, May 1 from noon to 4 p.m.
This exciting event temporarily closes streets to automobile traffic so that people may use them for walking, bicycling, playing, and meeting their neighbors.
I am now able to share some additional information concerning the route and our public outreach efforts.
The route will connect the North Davidson Arts District (NoDa) to Cordelia Park, Uptown, First Ward Park, Little Sugar Creek Greenway, and Memorial Stadium. The route has been vetted and approved by CMPD, the Charlotte Fire Department, and NCDOT.
Event organizers are working to notify businesses and residents along the route in the following ways:
The Open Streets 704 event will be the first in a series of four events made possible by a grant from the Knight Foundation. Similar events currently take place in more than 100 cities across North America. Open Streets programs have proven to be successful at achieving goals related to recreation, public health, active transportation and community building.

You are invited to attend a construction kick-off event for the new MEDIC building on Tuesday, April 19 at 9 a.m. The building is located at 4301 Wilkinson Blvd. Light refreshments will be provided following the ceremony.
MEDIC is currently in a leased facility with limited parking that it has outgrown. As part of Bringing Mecklenburg County to You, the County has purchased a larger site to ensure that MEDIC has the space it needs to serve a growing population.
