Crossover week has come and gone for the North Carolina General Assembly, and there was quite a flurry of activity. Last Thursday’s crossover deadline simply meant that bills that were not passed out of their chamber of origin were rendered non-factors for the rest of this legislative session.
Exceptions to the crossover deadline are appropriations, redistricting, and adjournment-related bills. Here is a recap of bills that are now law, bills that are still in play, and bills that did not make crossover.
With crossover behind us, the General Assembly now heads into full budget mode. The Senate is expected to release its proposed budget the week of May 7. The House budget proposal will follow weeks later.

I wanted to update you on a change to my Executive Team. Deputy County Manager/Chief of Staff Chris Peek is leaving the organization.
Chris will become the President and Chief Executive Officer of CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia starting May 15. He has served on the hospital's Board of Directors since 2014.
While we will certainly miss Chris, this is an incredible opportunity to manage a 435-bed hospital with 4,000 employees. Chris has done a tremendous job for us, and it shows what can happen when you enable your employees to succeed. I know he will do a great job for CaroMont.
Chris became deputy manager shortly after I became County Manager in January 2014. He manages our Asset and Facility Management Department, along with Human Resources, Public Information and the County Manager's Office, among other duties. Chris joined Mecklenburg County as a senior Human Resources manager in 2006, and was promoted to Human Resources director in 2007. Prior to joining Mecklenburg County, he spent 11 years with the Salvation Army Human Resources Department at its corporate headquarters in Atlanta, GA.
The search for his replacement begins immediately. Child Support Enforcement Hosts 2017 Employer Roundtable This Friday
