BOCCLegislative Update

The Senate is expected to release its budget proposal this week, with the House’s proposal to follow several weeks later. While draft legislation has yet to surface, continued teacher pay increases, tax cuts and other measures aimed at sparking economic development are expected to be at the core of each budget proposal.

Members of the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners and staff leadership will travel to Raleigh to join county officials from around the state on Wednesday, May 10 for the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners County Assembly Day. After hearing from the Governor and legislative leadership, County officials will meet with their local delegations about legislative issues of importance to their home counties.

For more information, contact Legislative Affairs Liaison Jonathan Sink at 980-314-2884 or Jonathan.Sink@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.

Public Health Staff Helps Train Other State Agencies in Implementing Smoke-Free Public Housing Rule

Mecklenburg County Public Health has been a leader in the State in promoting smoke-free multi-unit housing and providing technical assistance to market rate, affordable and public housing owners, managers and organizations.
Because of our success in promoting tobacco-free and smoke-free facilities, the NC Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch (an NC Division of Public Health) recently asked County Public Health staff to host an in-person training for other public health staff throughout the State.

The training offered skill building and application sessions on how to implement HUD’s Smoke-Free Public Housing Rule which requires public housing authorities to be smoke-free by July 30, 2018. Participants made a site visit to two Charlotte Housing Authority sites that are already smoke-free and heard perspectives on smoke-free housing directly from residents.

Public Health has also worked with the Greater Charlotte Apartment Association to launch a smoke-free certification program to communities that have taken the environmentally friendly initiative to go smoke-free.

For more information, contact Public Health Director Dr. Marcus Plescia at 980-314-9020 or Marcus.Plescia@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.
