Park and Rec Honors Memory of Newtown Students and Teachers with Art Dedication, Service Project

The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department is honoring the memory of the students and teachers lost in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn., and you can help.

On Saturday, Nov. 7 beginning at 8:45 a.m., the department will hold an art piece dedication followed by a service project at Park Road Park, 6220 Park Road.

The art piece, located near the Newtown Memorial Playground at the entrance to the park, is a 12-foot artificial tree with 26 mirror ornaments representing the lives lost during the tragedy. The idea was inspired and produced by local residents.

The service project, led by Commissioner Matthew Ridenhour, will include the planting of 26 live trees near the lake. Volunteers are needed to help plant trees and spread mulch.

If you would like to participate in the service project, please contact Lori.Saylor@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov at 980-314-1045 by Wednesday, Nov. 4.
